Improve IDE Layout Design

My ideal IDE layout is when you have Class Browser top Left, and split in the bottom left is the Attributes & Methods. The code is filled right. This seems the most productive for myself as the class browser needs more horizontal space (about the same width as attributes/methods combined.) I didn't think this was possible. And then...

After a system was refreshed I went through the process of setting up the layouts again and somehow I managed to get my ideal layout by accident. See attached.

I cannot seem to set it up again on any other environment. Perhaps I need to have more coffee so I can get fidgety more. It is quite fidgety even to change your basic layout.

Is it possible to have some simple design function either in the preferences or off the IDE Layout menu?

The simplest way I can think of is a listbox of "Container", Class Window, Method Window, References Window, Method Window. Then drag and drop the desired layout in to table.

However happy with anything that's usable. Kevin has a good idea in the comments.

Thanks BeeJay. The PDF helped, think the main trick was to get that class snap across the top. Also I had to reset to the default Jade layout first, it wouldn't snap properly until I did this.

    Please keep this idea open.

    Hi James,

I've attached a PDF document with screen shots showing what the indicator box for the docking looks like at various stages through achieving the desired layout.  Hopefully that will help you more easily get to your desired layout.

Note:  I'm not in any way suggesting it wouldn't be good to make this easier to achieve.  I'm just trying to help you get the desired layout in 2 simple drag operations to get things docked correctly, and then one drag operation to give more space to the editor pane.   :-)

    Cheers,
    BeeJay.

I believe this is more of an issue with how the dock controls work in general as our users experience similar issues when moving things within our application, and if done accidentally they struggle to move things back.  It'd be better if floating/docking showed some kind of pop-up/overlay like Visual Studio does which allows you to click a button indicating where you want to dock the window.

Thanks BeeJay, following your instructions I still struggle. Therefore it must mean the IDE layout design isn't idiot proof.

I was able to get your desired layout in a few seconds as follows:

    1. Positioned the mouse over the left of the class list area until it turns into the 'move pane' finger cursor.

    2. Dragged up towards to top of the screen until the 'dotted rectangle' snaps to the full width of the screen.  This happens when you get quite close to the top of the child form.

    3. Now, do the same thing with the editor window, but drag it quite close to the right hand edge so it snaps to a full height dotted rectangle.

    4. Then, use the resize bars to adjust to the desired relative percentages of theform.

In other words, how it will snap is affected by how close you drag to the border of the child form.  I find it easiest to do this with a maximised child window.

    Cheers,
    BeeJay.
